Deeply in love with classic soul, rhythm & blues and gospel from an early age, Nikki O’Neill is an R&B/Americana singer, songwriter and guitarist who counts Pops Staples, Prince, and Teenie Hodges as her guitar heroes, but it’s songwriting that’s her main love.
Her third solo album has just come out. The eleven songs on Stories I Only Tell My Friends (written by Nikki) evolve around exclusion, uprooting and her personal experiences with migration, while others describe the struggles of staying creative and maintaining a quiet sense of wonder in a fast-paced information society. And then there are songs that are pure celebrations of love.
Music journalists —including American Blues Scene, Americana UK, and other publications in Belgium, Sweden, France and the Netherlands — describe the album as “highly recommended” with a band “in sparkling form,” and Nikki as “a songwriter of merit” who “has everything to make it big.” She recently opened for Eilen Jewell at the Old Town School of Folk Music, making many new fans that night.
Rootsy, catchy, melodic and timeless, her sound is very much a joint creation of Nikki and her 5-piece band, who will join her: Chris Corsale (guitars, vocals), Teddy Myers (keyboards), Rich Lackowski (drums, vocals), and newest member Andy Mirsberger (bass, vocals). Watch this clip of them playing at Gallagher Way this past October, then RSVP for their show on Saturday, May 17.
